I am participating in a Get Wise* pilot program, to keep myself somewhat accountable, I will sometimes be sharing some of the journal prompts and my responses.
Semester 2 focuses on exploring how our intrapersonal and interpersonal wounds from Christian Science affect our sense of self. Understanding how we are personally wired (personality), our attachment styles, and how to develop healthy boundaries is essential for creating interdependent relationships where we feel connected and valued.
Semester 2 builds on the six themes from Semester 1, and will revisit the concepts of Instantaneous Healing, All Harmonious, Knowing the Truth, “God’s Perfect Child,” Demonstration, and Infinite Supply with new teachings from the Pardons, insights from Jeana, and questions to consider, ponder and reflect on.
Questions to Consider
- Did you feel a sense of belonging, worthiness, and competence in Christian Science? Please explain.
I was never a “good enough” Christian Scientist to fully belong, at my local church, or at Prin. I felt like I was cosplaying a Christian Scientist, faking it until I made it, and I never made it.
Questions to Ponder
- How did “instantaneous healing” give you a sense of power, control, or pain-free gain?
Instantaneous healing gave me heavy sense of failure, inadequacy, and pain. I was never any good at it.
- What has been the cost of “instantaneous healing” in your life and your family? How does it affect you currently?
I am not good at recognizing when I have a problem. I am not good at asking for help. I am not good at receiving compassion and empathy, and am often suspicious when it is offered. This is an ongoing theme.
Reflections
- Do you have a place or community where you feel you belong? Are there places where you feel you do not belong?
Yes, to both.
- Do you feel competent in your current life? Are there areas where you would like to grow or learn?
Sometimes. Navigating health issues continues to be a challenge.

Get Wise is organized by the Fellowship of Former Christian Scientists, which is, a Christian Ministry. They connect people with a background in Christian Science and those who walk alongside them with Christ-centered resources, care and community. The content for the Get Wise support groups is safe for both Christian and secular participants. If you’d like to learn more, you can reach them directly at https://ffcsministry.org/
You gave a new insight about instantaneous healing: It makes one feel competence.
For me, talking about instantaneous healing is shooting for the stars millions of miles away. I have worked in a laboratory that studies psychic phenomena. People who have had an instantaneous healing have it so infrequently that you cannot count on it as a repeatable phenomenon.
fwiw, I could never manage “healing” much less instantaneously.
I was often reminded “the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts”(see related post: https://kindism.org/2013/01/12/the-belief-in-sin-is-punished-so-long-as-the-belief-lasts/), and at this point, some of these “beliefs” have lasted two decades or more. CS does not work.
About healing–it works for a very few. So, the idea that it’s for everyone is crazy. Then to add to the mix instantaneous healing sends me into an unnecessary phycological tizzy.
